The process of getting to an American summer camp might seem complicated, but we’ve got it down. Here we will walk you through every step, from finding a job to booking your travel. You’ll earn a minimum of $2,250 for the season, with meals and accommodation included.

Seven steps to the ultimate summer

Step by step, here’s what the journey looks like from start to finish.

Step 1 – Complete the online application

It covers the basics about you, your background, interests and why you want to work at camp. It doesn’t take long, and you don’t need everything figured out before you start.

Step 2 – Chat to us

Once we’ve got your application, we’ll reach out to say hello and answer any questions you might have. You can also get in touch with us at any point via WhatsApp.

Step 3 – Pay your £49 deposit and build your profile

Your £49 deposit secures your place on the programme and gives you access to our online portal. You’ll build out your profile, upload photos, videos and really show camps who you are.

Step 4 – Interview with our team

We’ll have a proper chat to get to know you better and make sure we’re helping you find the right kind of placement. It’s informal – think of it as a conversation rather than an interview – but it’s a really useful step and one we won’t skip.

Step 5 – Browse camp jobs and apply

Once your profile is in top shape, you’ll be able to browse live camp job listings and apply for the ones that appeal to you. Camps can also approach you directly if your profile catches their eye.

Step 6 – Start your visa application

Once you’ve been offered a job by a camp, it’s time to start the J-1 visa process. We’ll sponsor your visa and guide you through the steps, including booking your appointment at the US Embassy. The visa costs $185, paid directly to the embassy.

Step 7 – Pack your bags and head to camp

That’s it. You’ve done the hard part. Book your flights, sort your packing list, and get ready for a summer you’ll be talking about for years.

Are you eligible?

Most people who want to work at a US summer camp are eligible – the requirements are straightforward. Here’s a quick run through – see if you tick the boxes.

You’re 18 or over by 1st June, the year you plan to travel
You’re available for 8 weeks from mid-June
You have a good level of written and spoken English
You have no criminal record
You’re genuinely interested in working with children and young people
You’re open to different types of roles and camp environments
The typical age range is 18-30, but if you’re older and have a specific skill set camps are looking for, get in touch. We review applications on a case-by-case basis and have successfully placed older applicants who had something specific to offer.

Camp Connect USA is open to all nationalities. If you have the right to live, work or study in the UK, you’re welcome to apply. If you’re unsure about your eligibility based on your passport or visa status, just ask us and we’ll take a look.

Once your deposit is paid and your profile is live, the next job is making sure it’s as strong as it can be. Think of your profile as your shop window – it’s how camps are going to find you, and the more detail and personality you put into it, the better. We’ll give you guidance on what to include and how to make the most of it.

We know this sounds like a complex (and scary) prospect. But this is something we do every single year for hundreds of applicants, and we’ll hold your hand through every step of it. You won’t be navigating US immigration paperwork on your own – we sponsor your J-1 visa and walk you through the process from start to finish, including your embassy appointment. Why do kids go to summer camp in America?

How long is summer camp in the US?

American summer camp placements usually last around 8 weeks between June and August, depending on your specific role and camp needs. Some camps may offer shorter or longer contracts. After camp, you’ll have the opportunity to travel around the US for up to 30 days on your J-1 visa.
